Obituary for John Doyle

John Inglis Doyle of Fritz Reuter Retirement Community in North Bergen passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015. John was born May 14, 1932 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of James and Annie Doyle. He served in the British army and then immigrated to the United States as a young man, settling in New Jersey where he met and married Matilda (Tillie) Sama in 1958. They were together for 57 years of which they lived more than 50 years in Rutherford. Tillie predeceased him in March of 2015.

John graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Business and spent his working career in various accounting positions. He last worked for more than 30 years at The Lumber Exchange in Greenpoint, Brooklyn where he was the Chief Financial Officer.

John was an intellectual who also enjoyed the fruits of the vine and good food. His interests ranged from listening to Italian opera with Tillie, to classical music to reading good books, travelling to Italy, touring museums, and watching sports; the Jets from years ago, and the Yankees. John was loquacious and enjoyed conversing with everyone he met. He was a fervent liberal and loved a lively political debate.

In addition to his parents John was predeceased by his sister, Agnes (Nancy) Rust. He is survived by his older sister Isabel Gardiner of Scotland, niece Maureen Bryant and nephew Robert Rust of Wenatchee, Washington; nephew George Gardiner and nieces Margaret Mackay and Sheila White of England. He was also beloved and survived by in-laws, Melanie and Gideon Loewenstein of Groton, CT, Jennie Sama of Basking Ridge, NJ and nephews, David and Adin Loewenstein, Joseph Sama; nieces Vicki and Francine Sama, Marygrace Gonzalez, Joann Murphy, and Pia Calabretta; and very special friends George Tracy and Ronald Taylor.

A graveside remembrance service will be on Saturday April 2, 2016. Please consider a contribution to an animal shelter of choice in honor of John and Tillie’s affection for animals, especially cats.
